IT’S ALL IN THE CORE

VINYL FLOORS BASICS

Like laminate, solid hardwood, and engineered hardwood floors, vinyl floors have a protective wear layer on their top surface. The wear layer’s purpose is to protect the decorative film layer, followed by the core structure.

The first generation of vinyl floors has a core made from plastic, thus called vinyl. With technological advancements, second-generation vinyl floors have a core made from wood and plastic composites, thus called WPC. Whereas the 3rd generation has a core made from stone and plastic composites, thus called SPC. The main benefit of the non-wood cores is to resist water.

WPC vs. SPC

Wood-plastic composites (WPC) are an alternative solution to glued-down vinyl sheets. One of the benefits is a more rigid core structure with higher durability and performance. WPC and SPC, unlike vinyl sheets, are not glued down. An advanced click-lock mechanism is used, making them easy to install.

Stone Plastic Composites (SPC) were later introduced as a core problem found in WPC when exposed to temperatures above 150°F. Thus, instead of wood, stones are mixed with plastic to create a denser core version with a higher melting temperature.
